Software classification depends on the media on which it's been recorded and the nature of the software. Media include:CD, DVD, Laserdisc, Minidisc and other laser-read disks. Even though there are differences in the manufacturing and recording - or writing - processes, these are all designed to be read by some kind of laser system once recorded.
